Designing Effective E-learning

Designing for effective E-learning involves implementing the elements of online course design
and the importance of instructional strategies and tools in the development process.

Instructional Design Models

These models provides guidelines to organize appropriate pedagogical scenarios to achieve instructional goals. Examples include: Seels and Glasgow, Dick and Carey Systems, ASSURE, SAM, Kemp, ADDIE, etc.

As you can see in the Venn Diagram to the left many of these models overlap.

Adult Learners

Adult learners are unique because they bring a wide variety of past experiences exposures and current knowledge to the learning experience.  It is very important to assess "Who Is On Your team" when developing a learning experience for  adult learners. For this reason, when offering a learning experiences to educate professors on transitioning from Classic to New Quizzes in Canvas the professors are offered many options.

Example of Designing a  Document with Course Outcomes

Learning outcomes refer to what the learner will be able to do and be as the result of the course or program.

Learning objectives are at the module level and are aligned to meet the stated learning outcomes.

Learner and Stakeholder Needs

It is important to recognize diverse needs of learners that are related to their identities including race, religion, ability level, gender, national origin.  Comprehending  Individual Education Programs and 504 plans based on ADA needs also enhancing the learning experience.

For example, in the sample on the right this poster for professors explains the process to learn how to transition the online course quizzes from the Classic to New Quiz format and addresses individual needs including how o obtain live help.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

There are 3 universal principles for design for learning.

Engagement is the why of learning which is for purposeful, motivated learners, stimulate interest and motivation for learning.

Representation is the what of learning which is for resourceful, knowledgeable learners, present information and content in different ways.

Action and expression are the how of learning which is for strategic, goal-directed learners, differentiate the ways that students can express what they know.

There are many great tools that support the principles of UDL.
